PPA Map Primer

MapWhenever you’re not sure of where you’re going and need guidance, what’s the first thing you do? We know: whip out Google Maps, right? Yep, thought so.

Let’s face it: Tangible maps are a thing of the past. With a variety of mapping tools available online nowadays, not only can we get directions, we can also create our own maps — and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing.

For the past few months, we’ve created multiple maps to better visualize important information instead of just looking at a cluttered list. Check out the maps below!

Scooter PicMap #1: Motorcycle & Scooter Parking Locations

Who doesn’t like taking their two-wheeler out for a spin? Better yet, your two-wheeler may be your primary mode of transportation. Here’s the good news — you don’t have to search aimlessly to find a parking spot for your scooter or motorcycle. As of right now, Philly has 47 parking corrals for scooters and motorcycles — and the locations are highlighted in this interactive map. By the way, for only $5 you can park in any corral all day long, or you can purchase a virtual permit!

Psst — make sure you also understand the do’s and don’ts of parking your two-wheeler in Philly.

Red-light cameraMap #2: Red Light Camera Locations

Pump those breaks: Going through a red light puts you and pedestrians in harm’s way. In fact — not only can it put a dent in your car, but also your wallet with a $100 fine!

Here’s the thing: Police officers can issue violations in person, but if you go through a red light at one of 26 intersections highlighted in this map, a violation can be issued through our Red Light Camera Program.

For more information on Red Light Camera violations, give this blog post a looksie.

RPP MapMap #3: Residential Parking Permit Districts & Blocks

We can’t take credit for this one, but we give credit where credit is due. For the past year or so,  Lauren Ancona, Data Scientist from the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Information and Technology, has been developing an elaborate residential parking permit map. After meticulously outlining boundaries of residential parking districts, Ancona then added the active permit blocks by using data we released for Code for Philly’s Hackathon. The map isn’t entirely complete yet. In fact — Ancona comically makes note of it in the map with a disclaimer reading “ Warning: This Jawn is in Alpha.” Either way, the map is slick and easy to navigate, so fool around with it and see for yourself!

PangoMap #4: Pay-By-Cell Parking Pilot Boundaries

Alright, Philly. We know you’ve been waiting a long time for this.

By now we’re sure you’ve heard we’ve partnered with Pango USA to develop a mobile app that allows visitors to conveniently pay for parking with a few taps to their smartphone. But if anything is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. That’s why we’re going to have a test launch at select locations around Philly before launching the app city-wide. You can check out the boundaries and locations where the app will be available in this map. Also, make sure you keep an eye on our blog for more details on the app as they roll in!

Have an idea for map you’d like to see? Let’s hear your suggestion on Twitter or Facebook and maybe we’ll throw it into our map arsenal!

Where to Park for the Made in America Music Festival

Made In AmericaOnce again the Made in America festival is making a triumphant return to the Ben Franklin Parkway! In fact, this year has a special meaning with local acts Meek Mill and Superheaven scheduled to serenade  the thousands of spectators attending. But the fun doesn’t stop with Meek Mill and Superheaven — the festival’s line-up will surely satisfy even the pickiest music fans.

On September 5 and 6,  the festival will set up shop on the Ben Franklin Parkway. Aside from watching amazing live music, attendees can snack on some munchies from gourmet food trucks, or take a break from the festival and visit the Philadelphia Art Museum, The Franklin Institute or The Barnes Foundation. You get the point: The world will be your oyster on the Parkway. But if you still need to buy your tickets, visit ticketmaster before they sell out!

Here’s the thing: Getting around during the festival is going to be tough, so if you have 99 problems, don’t let parking be one. Luckily our Gateway Garage and 19th and Callowhill Streets parking lot are within close walking distance to all the festivities! You can also find a parking spot that suits you with our snazzy parking locator.

Need more help finding a spot? We can get you squared away on Twitter and Facebook!

Effective today, September 2, 2015, the TLD has waived the WAV taxicab driver prerequisite outlined in 52 Pa. Code 1021.5a (b)(7)(i) requiring WAV taxicab driver applicants to have at least 2 years of Philadelphia taxicab service during the immediately preceding 3 years. Hence forth, the Authority will require WAV taxicab driver applicants to have just 1 year of Philadelphia taxicab service as an Authority certificated driver during the immediately preceding 3 years.

This waiver was granted in an effort to meet the needs of both the community of people with disabilities and industry members to provide WAV taxicab services in Philadelphia. This decision may be viewed here (Download).

All WAV taxicabs must be operated only by certified WAV taxicab drivers. The Authority’s WAV taxicab regulations along with Form No. DR-4 “WAV Driver Application” may be obtained on the TLD’s “Resources and Forms” page of this website. Parking Fails: Volume III

What’s one of the first things you learned when you got your learner’s permit? Aside from turning on the ignition, how to properly park was probably up there. Whether it was parallel parking on the street, or parking in a lot, knowing how to do it is a must for any motorist.

Welp — the motorists in our third volume of Parking Fails might want to reassess their parking abilities, or lack thereof. If you missed it, check out Parking Fails Volume I and Volume II. And here is Parking Fails Volume III!

Parking Fail # 7Parking Fail #1

Honey, I’m going fishing. Not sure when I’ll be back.”

Hopefully this guy’s catch for the day was worth it. In fact — he probably had to sell off his catch and put the cash toward a new car. Better yet, the conversation with his wife upon returning home probably didn’t go too well either.

Hun, I have good news and bad news. The good news is I brought home dinner. The bad news well, we’re going to be hoofing it for a while.

Parking Fail # 8Parking Fail #2

We know Wal-Mart offers some great discounts, but come on, guy. Also, how did you even get out of your car? More importantly, where did shoppers wind up putting their shopping carts? We’re willing to bet the parking lot probably looked something like this.

Either way, there’s no excuse for this, even if it’s Black Friday.

Parking Fail # 9Parking Fail #3

Park between the lines? Nah — makes too much sense. Props to the lone nonconformist in this one though.

Seriously though, what part of the lines didn’t these drivers see? Maybe this was an unfortunate case of follow the leader.

Have you spotted some parking fails? Send them our way on Twitter or Facebook and maybe they’ll be featured in a future edition of Parking Fails!

parkingdaylogo1_0On September 18, if you see metered parking spaces taking the form of miniature parks (parklets), there’s no need to scratch your head! It’s International Park(ing) Day, a one-day event raising awareness for the importance of more open space within urban dwellings.

Come the third Friday of September, we’ll be rolling out the sod and setting up our recycling themed parklet at 7th and Market Streets. Passersby can swing by and win prizes from our prize wheel and create masterful works of art using recycled materials.

Speaking of art — our employees will also put their artistic skills to the test by decorating parking meters with recycled goods. Here’s the thing though: these meters won’t be collecting fees for parking, they’ll be accepting donations for our annual Holiday Charity, Santa Express! The decorated meters will be on display in our parklet, so feel free to drop a fews coins and help underprivileged families during the holiday season.

So if you’re out and about during your lunch hour on Friday, September 18, swing by our parklet on 7th and Market Streets. Oh yeah — our parklet will be right next to the Philadelphia Free Public Library. Feel free to find a good read and lounge in our parklet!

Where to Park for Eastern State Penitentiary’s Terror Behind the Walls

Terror Behind the WallsUsually when you’re in prison, it’s because you’ve committed a crime and have been deemed a menace to society, right? That’s far from the case with Eastern State Penitentiary’s Terror Behind the Walls where you pay for nightmares.

Here’s how it works — and it’s pretty simple: You pay the entrance fee, strut through the prison cell blocks and leave in a state of horror. Don’t believe us? See for yourself and check out the promo video here.

Each year Terror Behind the Walls raises hairs and scares the pants off of those brave enough to attend. It’s no wonder why it’s been featured on shows such as Ghost Hunters and Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures. Luckily, if you can’t handle the horror, a friendly staff member can escort you out before turning another nightmarish corner.

Sound like your cup of tea? You can get a little appetizer of Terror Behind the Walls on September 18 and 19 before it goes into full throttle in October. Check out the dates and event FAQs here and remember — the zombies you run into aren’t real, but your nightmares will make you think otherwise.

Speaking of nightmares, we don’t want parking to be a part of them. We can help! Our 19th and Callowhill Streets parking lot is only a 13 minute walk from the gates of horror, but if our lot is filled by the time you arrive, don’t get scared. You can also use our parking locator to find a spot that’s best for you.
