Where to Park for Fete Day

$

elfreths-alley-tour-historic-philadelphia-587-587x0Philly is home to some of the oldest structures and traditions in the country, including bars, markets and parades. And, a quiet street in Old City holds the title of America’s oldest residential street: Elfreth’s Alley.

Dating back to 1728, Elfreth’s Alley isn’t just the oldest street in the city, or state, but the whole country! And similar to Philly’s culture today, residents of Elfreth’s Alley represented the everyday working class during America’s early years.

Here’s the best part, history buffs: On Saturday June 6, you’ll literally be allowed to walk into history as Elfreth’s Alley celebrates Fete Day. Current residents of Elfreth’s Alley will open up their homes to the public  from 1 to 5 p.m.! It’s the perfect opportunity for history and architecture enthusiasts to snag a rare glimpse inside preserved 18th century homes.

Aside from touring houses of America’s oldest residential street, visitors can sample authentic colonial cuisines (no cheesesteaks), take carriage rides or even take an 18th century family photo!

Now before walking into a time warp, you’ll need a parking spot — and we have two convenient garages located right around the corner from Elfreth’s Alley. Check out the locations below, or feel free to use our parking locator. We can also field any questions on Twitter and Facebook!

Floats, confetti, rainbows — you name it, it’ll be there as 25,000 participants march proudly through the City of Brotherly Love.

Starting at 11:30 a.m. in the heart of the Gayborhood at 13th and Locust streets, the parade will make its way through Center City and Philadelphia’s historic district before ending at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing.

#TBT: AutoPark at Center City

#TBT 15th & ArchIn late 2014, you probably noticed that we added the brand spankin’ new Family Courthouse Garage to our slew of AutoParks in Center City. For this month’s #TBT, we’re not dwelling on 2014. Instead, we’re heading back to the same location in 1992.

Before becoming the Family Courthouse Garage, 1503 Arch Street was a surface lot called AutoPark Center City. In 1992, the AutoPark Center City opened for public use and was constantly filled to the brim until it closed up shop in 2010.

Clearly a lot has changed since 1992. Just look at the first customer’s truck and compare it to today’s Ford F150s! One thing hasn’t changed: 1503 Arch Street is still a perfect jumping off point for a good ole walking tour of Philly.

Now that you’ve stepped into 1992 — jump back to 2015 and see what our Family Courthouse Garage has to offer!

Parking for Visitors

VisitorParkingThroughout each year, Philadelphia is known for its lively atmosphere with events such as The Broad Street Run, The Mummers Day Parade and Wawa’s Welcome America Festival — and that’s only naming a few!

You get the point: Philadelphia does big events, and we do them right. And if you’re a Philadelphia resident, you might have friends and family visiting so you can enjoy all the festivities as a group.

Here’s the good news: We can make you an even better host by helping you get parking for your visitors!

If you have a residential parking permit (RPP), there are two options for visitor parking:

  1. Day passes:
  • Day passes consist a single booklet of five passes for $35.
  • Residents can purchase a maximum of two booklets, and then have to wait 90 days before buying another.
  • To use the pass, scratch off the month and date on which the pass will be used, and write the visitor’s license plate number in the box provided on the pass. Then, hang the pass on the rearview mirror. You can download the day pass application here: Day Pass Application.
  1. Temporary parking passes:
  • Temporary parking passes can be purchased per visitor vehicle for a maximum of 30 days (or two increments of 15 days).
  • After the 30 days have passed, that visitor vehicle has to wait 45 days before they can get another temporary pass.
  • Temporary parking passes cost $15 for 15 days. To purchase a temporary pass, visit our office at 35 N. Eighth Street.

Both passes are valid for up to a year after purchase.

And that’s how it’s done: getting parking for your visitors. If you have any questions, you can call our customer service office at 215-683-9730. We can also field any questions on Twitter and Facebook!

welcome americaWhat better place to celebrate our nation’s birthday then, well, its birthplace?

Sure, Philadelphia is well known for doing big events, but July Fourth has a special feel to it in Philly. In fact ﹘ we start celebrating a week early with Wawa’s Welcome America Festival!

On Saturday, June 27, Wawa’s Welcome America Festivities will get underway. We’re talking everything from block parties to FREE admission to the Franklin Institute and National Constitution Center. Of course, this is all just an appetizer for the huge Welcome America Concert on the Parkway!

Come July Fourth from 7 p.m. – 10:30 p.m., more than 100,000 people will flock to the Parkway as The Roots take the stage along with Grammy-winning artists Miguel and Jennifer Nettles. If that isn’t enough, an elaborate fireworks display will be topping off the party on the Parkway! Oh yeah ﹘ if you happen to get really close to up, watch out when Miguel takes the stage. He hasn’t quite perfected the long jump yet.

Now let’s talk parking: With over 100,000 people expected to be in town for the celebrations, it’d be a good idea to plan ahead, which includes finding a parking spot. Taxis For All Philadelphia In Support of Order 126-11: Modern Taxicab Standards

$
0
0

You are stranded and alone. It is 2 a.m., you are 10 miles from your home, and there is no bus route you can take back. Most have stopped running anyway. You call for a cab for the eighth time, but there is still not a single vehicle in the whole city to take you home. You have been waiting for three hours, hoping that one will come on duty. All you can do is wait.

It is a story common to more than 120,000 people with mobility disabilities in Philadelphia. You do everything right—you call for a ride from a taxicab company (often days beforehand, as is the current policy for wheelchair accessible vehicles) and your ride just never shows up. And when they stand you up, you’re stuck waiting on that lonely corner.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority’s Proposed Rulemaking Order 126-11 ”Modern Taxicab Standards” would solve this problem. The new regulation will require vehicles purchased for taxicab service after a designated date to be wheelchair accessible. If this rule is approved, the precedent of universal accessibility will be set here in Philadelphia and other cities across the nation will be urged to follow suit. We have waited on that lonely street corner long enough.

Accessibility is a civil right. Twenty-five years after the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, politicians and businesses alike are still disregarding the rights of people with disabilities. As with every struggle for civil rights, a shift will only occur through the efforts of those with the strength and courage to correct injustice. We must continue the fight.

This regulation is about more than transportation. Being able to utilize a responsive transit system means being able to participate in society. Being heard and understood starts with being able to come to the table. Accessibility is the first step toward awareness and acceptance, and we can’t afford to wait any longer.

Your part starts with submitting a public comment in support of this rulemaking. It starts with you going to http://www.philapark.org/2015/06/proposed-rulemaking-126-11-modern-taxicab-standards/ and sending an email.

Let’s make the City of Brotherly Love the first city in America with a fully accessible, fully integrated taxicab system—with liberty and taxis for all.

Note: The above text was drafted by Taxis For All Philadelphia, an advocacy group promoting unhindered taxicab accessibility for those with mobility disabilities.

IMG_0118Joined by activists from Taxis For All Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Parking Authority placed the first of 150 new Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) taxicabs into service today.

Fifty new WAV medallions have been sold so far and eleven more will be up for sale in the coming weeks. With an overall legislative target of 150 new WAV vehicles by 2021, the PPA expects to have 61 new WAV taxicabs in service in Philadelphia by the end of the year.

“Thousands of disabled people in wheelchairs have been waiting far too long for this day to come. We are proud and pleased to put the first of 150 new WAV taxis on the streets of Philadelphia today,” PPA Executive Director Vince Fenerty said.

“The disability community and activists from Taxis For All Philadelphia should be commended for all of their hard work and dedication in helping us push for the necessary regulatory changes to create 150 new WAV taxis,” Fenerty said.

Taxis For All Philadelphia — an activist group that has been advocating to make Philadelphia the first city in America with a fully accessible taxicab system — was on hand to show support and continue its advocacy for full and equal access for disabled persons.

IMG_0086Speaking on behalf of Taxis For All Philadelphia, Matt Clark said, “This is the first step to open the city to all of us. Next, we must pass Proposed Rulemaking Order 126-11. Over the long term, this would ensure that every cab in Philadelphia could be used by all.”
