Pump dem brakes!—we’re adding three new red light camera locations to our Red Light Camera Program.
In case you’re, like, totally out of the loop, red light running is the most common cause of all urban car accidents. In fact, according to the Federal Highway Administration, an estimated 165,000 motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians are injured annually by red light runners.
Think about that for a second—165,000 people annually! Here’s the thing, those 165,000 injuries can be prevented—and red light cameras can help. In fact, a 2011 study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found red light cameras helped decrease red light running crashes by 24 percent—and we’re trying to build upon that in Philadelphia.
Alright, so here’s the deal–with the addition of the new red light cameras, the total of intersections with cameras installed will be 26. Check out below for the new red light camera locations.
New Red Light Camera Intersections: Operational Date:
Once the cameras become operational at the above locations, there will be a forty-five (45) day warning period. That means red light runners will be mailed a politely written warning during the first forty-five days, but after that, the gloves are off and they will receive a violation notice that comes with a $100 fine.
