Philly is home to some of the oldest structures and traditions in the country, including bars, markets and parades. And, a quiet street in Old City holds the title of America’s oldest residential street: Elfreth’s Alley.
Dating back to 1728, Elfreth’s Alley isn’t just the oldest street in the city, or state, but the whole country! And similar to Philly’s culture today, residents of Elfreth’s Alley represented the everyday working class during America’s early years.
Here’s the best part, history buffs: On Saturday June 6, you’ll literally be allowed to walk into history as Elfreth’s Alley celebrates Fete Day. Current residents of Elfreth’s Alley will open up their homes to the public from 1 to 5 p.m.! It’s the perfect opportunity for history and architecture enthusiasts to snag a rare glimpse inside preserved 18th century homes.
Aside from touring houses of America’s oldest residential street, visitors can sample authentic colonial cuisines (no cheesesteaks), take carriage rides or even take an 18th century family photo!
Now before walking into a time warp, you’ll need a parking spot — and we have two convenient garages located right around the corner from Elfreth’s Alley. Check out the locations below, or feel free to use our parking locator. We can also field any questions on Twitter and Facebook!
