Spring’s arrival brings many changes that make it a little easier to get out of bed in the morning and a little harder to focus on work or school. Warmer weather and cloudless skies become more frequent. Barbeque grills are dusted off for Sunday cook-outs. And if you’re an avid cyclist in Philly, it’s the perfect time to strap on your helmet and breeze down the scenic Boathouse Row.
You get the point — as we delve deeper into spring and soon enough, summer, there’s going to be more cyclists on the road — especially considering May is National Bike Month!
With more than half of the U.S. population living within five miles of their workplace, National Bike Month highlights cycling as a healthier and more sustainable mode of commuting, compared to driving a vehicle. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau , the number of bicycle commuters in the U.S. jumped by more than 62 percent from 2000 to 2013. If you have a bike collecting dust, brush it off, grab your helmet and check out the events listed below!
- Bike to School Day: May 6
- Bike to Work Week: May 11 -15
- Bike to Work Day: May 15
So if you’re on your morning commute, or just walking the streets, don’t be surprised at the increase of cyclists on the road. In fact, if you want to jump on the bandwagon, browse the many bike shops scattered throughout Philly or try the new bike share program!
